Permalink Closed

i have a 2002 monte carlo 3.4 l

last year my radio locked up  i took it to the dealer ship but they were unable to get any codes from the bcm...my car still runs but ive been told conflicting info on the bcm's installation... what i need to know is 1- where is it located 2- does it have to bee programmed by the dealer to the vin# and 3rdly where can i get a resonably priced body control module?? my car is still running but im starting to have problems with the battery and it not turning on the way it should......its also overheating...i was told this care had 2 thermostats? is that true?

ok si i find aes online i call them and they tell me all i need is to have the radio reprogrammed....hmmm any thoughts from anyone on my situation?

- BCM is in the drivers side kick panel (sidewall near the pedals).

- Yes, the dealer has to program it, not only with the VIN, but with all the options the car has. An independent shop can program it also, but they need a TechII scanner/programmer. Not many do.

- Rockauto has them, but you have to have the dealer install and program. Some wont install customer supplied parts, you need to check with the dealer before you buy. The BCM is fairly cheap, its the labor to install and program that will kill you.

- Car has 1 T-Stat, on the 3400 it is located below the throttle body and exhaust crossover tube.

the 3400 is notorious for both Upper and Lower Intake Manifold Gasket failures, both of these can create an overheating problem. Check your oil for any signs of antifreeze contamination, also check the coolant for oil contamination.

The first time you do intake gaskets it can be a pain an take the weekend to do.They're not to hard/bad to do if you got air tools an have done a few it only takes afew hours an your done.

The 3400 are also prone to head gasket failure, but since your seeing the typical oil gunk in the radiator, it sounds more like the Intake gaskets. And there is only 1 T-stat, but there may be 2 air bleed ports. one on the heater pipe just above the waterpump and the other will be on the T-stat housing.

the intake gaskets are more time consuming that hard. Take your time and you'll be fine. After doing a few hundred inthe last 10 years, I can get them done in about 5 hours without air tools. 4 with. And buy the better gaskets!!! the cheap ones will only leave you doing them again in a year or so.

As for the BCM, Scott is right. Always ask the shop before buying. I know our shop won't install customers parts. It becomes a hassle with warranties. Was it installed wrong or part failure.

Back to the radio, they do lock up from time to time. They need to be cleared and programmed to the car by using a TechII, the BCM is probably not the cause.
