The 01 SS is getting about 23 per gallon, the GMC is getting about 8 per gallon, The 86 SS is sitting quietly waiting to come home and tear up the town!

$4.09 for regular and $4.35 for premium here

My computer in the 04 says I am averaging 24 mpg on 93 octane. I think I paid $4.17 the other day.

wow, didnt know the 5.3 got such bad mileage, my HEMI gets 17.5 in the city and 27-29 hwy, thats modded to roughly 400hp, DoD disabled and a heavy right foot.

well when i had a 07 ss i average 18/19 with heavy foot.. so seeing 13/14 without heavy foot just driving less than 5 miles to work makes me cringe.. hopefully after we get away from the "winter gas" it will go up to "my" normal 18/19.. the whole DoD thing blows.. when are u ever on a straight lvl highway where u can drop to 4 cylinders for longer than 1 minute???i would rather have the 4 cylinders working at stop and go's than all 8.. at red light why use all 8 unless i hit button so i can get off line fast... heck fist summer i had my 07 few weeks later was going to cape cod and we got stuck in im serious lie 4 hr traffic jam on the highway down there due to a accident "somewhere" im like crawling at 5 mph showing 0 miles per gallon and my gas gauge just keeps dropping lol i was worried ill be stuck there even longer lol... besides who is really gonna go on a highway with a v8 and drive granny style anyways? so whats point of DoD when only time its gonna kick in is while ur doing 70 mphor faster and at that speed ur using all 8.. they shoulda had it switched around 4 to 8 not 8 to 4

because driving a 3800 lb car with 4cyl will be worse mileage.

My brother had a 06 Trailblazer SS with the 6.0L LS2 and got better mileage than my neighbors 06 Trailblazer with the 6 cyl. Simply because getting a 6000 lb tank to move with the smaller engine was rough.

the reason for DoD to work at hwy speed is because you dont need all 8 cyl to keep the car moving, but in the city in stop and go traffic, you do.

true good point about the weight issue...
i thought the trailblazer had the same 5.3 as the montes, grand prix's and the buicks.. i did read somewhere that the trailblazer was also like a tenth or so quicker too than the monte was/is ..
soo basically have a DoD engine on a car that noone will actually drive on a highway.. it does handle so tight to the highways at high speeds and so comfy but again when im on highway and knowing no cops around im gonna open her up so again they should be a DoD on a family Van or something lol..i laugh any time i see a vette doing the speed limit on the highway im like dude ur a vette whats wrong with u lol.. i nod my head when i see a vette scream on by im like yea thats someone driving the car it was meant to be.. lol
so basically putting a DoD on a sports car just doesnt make sense its like a tease.. u want the better gas mileage but come on are u really gonna drive the speed limit with her ..

DoD goes back to Cadillac in the mid 80's, it didn't quite work back. But the concept is a good idea and does make sense. IF your just cruising on the thruway, then there is no reason for all 8 cylinders to be running. Only if your accelerating. And it really has nothing to do with fuel economy. It's really for tailpipe emmisions that are being governed by the EPA. The less tailpipe emmisions from cars means they can sell more trucks that have no emmision rating.

DoD is an option on some full size trucks and vans.

The Trailblazers has a 5.3L that is simular, it doesn't have the same HP rating and is set up for towing rather than cruising. So it will be considerably slower than Monte SS. The trailblazer SS has a 6.0L that rips and is quite a lot faster.

And I'd love to see you try ripping past a Vette doing the speed limit on the 90, 190 or 290 around here, The state troopers have 2 unmarked ones and by the time you realise who's driving, it's too late!

they have unmarked vettes?? nooooooooooooooo
i did know about the DoD with the cadi and heard storys how never worked well with cadi lol.. so its all about emissions huh lol nice.. anyway to trick the government..
i thought it was the 5.3 that was tenth or so faster musta read it wrong then .. what yr did the 6.0 come out? i remeber back in 07 talking and heard someone say about the trailblazer was faster.. not the 5.3 then?.. either way still bad ass suv..shame they stop making that too lol

The trailblazer with the 5.3L is a slug, I have never driven one that could get out of it's own way. The SS version came out in 04 I believe and it is a totally different. AWD makes it stick on turns at half throttle.

I was getting 14mpg in my Avalanche as well. That is the all around average. That's one of the reasons I got rid of it. I will be missing it though once the snow starts to fly again.

not stock thou.. he musta had a very nice set up for a v6 since my v8 is like high 13's to low 14's ive read.. gonna try myself at the strip near here (http://www.estadrags.com/) but will 40k on these tires i dont get much traction as is doubt have good numbers on a strip.. heck got all slidy on wet road today when turning onto a highway trying to take on a charger (he had inside turning lane i had outside turning lane).. i shoulda recalled the top gear show when they had a mercedes and a ferrari on a strip while wet they took so many tries before deciding to leave traction control on..

lol that is for damn sure.. heck didnt get the car for gas mileage but i got worried cause when i had my 07 i never droved it in the winter time so i guess never noticed winter gas mileage then got this used 06 and i was concerned it was something else until i found out about winter gas.. but also back in 07 premium was 3.56 when i filled her up in summer 07 when i got her.. (the 07 monte).. now its anywhere from 4.20 and up past 4.30 .. another 10 to 20 dollars on each fill up kinda sucks.. luckly my job now is right down the road compared to yrs past.... i like joking about i coulda traded her in for clunkers for cash from obama lol..

as well as yea v8's not good for gas but unless u do highway driving seems DoD isnt really helpful lol

she did get low 20's thou on the thruway on sunday.. lol after 20 miles of wondering why getting low teens and staring at the instant gas mileage and even taking foot of gas didnt help numbers til after staring for some time i see a little square box around 3..lol dont know why i wasnt in drive/overdrive.. that woulda sucked all my gas by time i got to the exit lol.... but yea DoD is nice on flatttt smooth highway but besides thruway not much is flat in new york lol.. be nice to have a switch to hit if sitting at trafic light or traffic jam on highway like i was in summer of 07 (with my 07 just got weeks prior to trip) going to cape cod stuck on highway for 3 to 4 hrs going like 1 or 2 mph and seeing my gas gauge just drop lol..

I have 04 3.8 V-6 Supercharged Intimidator SS. Wife and I went on a 175 mile round trip to the Jersey shore, and we got 30+ MPG according to the onboard computer. I use nothing but HI test gasoline.

I would ignore the computer and figure mileage the old fashion way. Some are close, others are way off.

My 04SS with the 3800SC would regularly see high 20's on the hwy. Before modding, I did get 30, but after all as done, 26-28 was the norm on the open road. (as long as you kept it out of positive boost)

I usually average 20-24mpg...on half stop and go, half mid speed..plus the occasional pulls as I gain boost...... I just can't help myself!

well it depends what car, how i'm driving etc.

when i had my 04 SCMCSS on the highway (75-80 mph) she'd get 28-31.5 mpg.

which was kinda weird that it was almost better then my 1.8t GTI.

odd question

i dont know didly about superchargers and turbo's..

how do they affect gas mileage?

or does those basically only affecting the air thats coming in and doesnt suck more gas same time...

the monte's from the 80's wherent the engines in those days cut back in power for better gas milage? if so dont they only get in the teens for gas milage?

and the guys who have DoD .. would u ever do whatever is needed to remove it and stay with all 8... ive read that they have had issues.. and its not like im really seeing the added bonus of it dropping down 4..and if in long run it will make my engine last longer wouldnt it be best then to use a program to remove it?

i dont know squat i wished i had a more active father who woulda taught me car stuff besides the ole braggin i had this and that crap

superchargers and turbos force more air into the engine which in turn requires more fuel. At normal driving, there isnt much of a difference in MPG, the big drop comes when you get into positive boost and the PCM adjusts the fuel to compensate. Same way a non SC or turbo motor requires more fuel when toy punch it, just at a much grander scale.

80's Montes were a victim of the gas crunch. They throttled back power on everything because it was the only way they knew of cheaply raising MPG. Todays motors / electronics are far more advanced. Thats why you can get 30mpg out of a 430hp LS motor. If you put an EFI system on a 80's Monte, your power and MPG will increase.

Cant speak for the DoD. I have MDS on the HEMI and have it electronically disabled. I have seen less than a 1 MPG difference and after seeing how it actually works, I have to figure less stress on the top end with it disabled.

There are 2 ways of disabling it (at least on the HEMI, have to figure its roughly the same on the LS).... Electronically with a tune (which is how I did mine), or mechanically by swapping the DoD internal parts with non DoD parts. Usually consists of lifters, rockers and possibly springs & valves plus a tune. Mechanically shouldnt be needed unless you are pushing a God awful amount of HP, talking 500+

cool thanks for all that insight..learned alot..so then u would for sure upgrade ur engine fuel system then in a much older car...would u do same on like 60's 70's muscle cars? or does that devalue/ defunk the look of the older bare and bones engine bays of those days?.. my dad says his 68 vette ran better than a camaro one of his bros had cause his vette had fuel injection unlike the camaro...

and so with the DoD u then think it would make engine last longer and so forth by removing the DoD

Some of the EFI systems fit right in place of a carb and really dont look bad. With the right air cleaner, you would never know.

I didnt disable the DoD for dependability, did it because it was annoying after being modded. It really sounded like crap with the exhaust and the delay was very noticeable.

I dont build for dependability.

i did read on a youtube video from a guy who said he had to remove the DoD on his monte after he got aftermarket exhaust cause like u said it sounded bad..

funny how they didint figure out better gas milage ways back in the 80's.. i loved the montes and the iroc z's and when i found out how tiny in hp they had with v8's i was like wtf..lol.. and i think tim told me his is like in the mid teens for gas mileage..im just glad i was still little kid in 80's granted i guess it woulda felt normal back then getting a car but GM sure didint know how to improve gas mileage very well .. musta been the asain imports that GM learned from for better gas mileage .. heck did u guys read about the new 2014 impala gonna have 3 engines a v6 and 2 4 cylinders one of which is a like a 2.4 turbo and funny thing is the 4 cylinders u only gain one more mile over the v6 and only 1k cheaper lol..4 cylinders in a full size just cause gm thinks we all worried about gas mileage.. heres a idea they finnaly did a great v6 with 300hp and good gas mileage for the hp i mean i got 303 but a v8 and im sure the v6 gets much better gas mileage... gm needs to stop making tinier engines and worry about what they good at which is big engines and just improve gas mileage.. again they showed they can with the new v6.. i would love the gas mileage that v6 in the camaro gets with 300 hp compared to my v8 with only 3 more hp.. only thing i have worth bragging over is its a v8.. plus im sure i get alot more torque?

the small V8 is easily fixed in the 4th gen. You can get a 290hp V8 crate motor (long block) for under $2K
