Rebuild Stock 87 Monte Carlo SS Rear Differential
Permalink Closed

Little help here...

My 87 Monte SS Aerocoupe is going under the knife and the Rear End will be dropped and practically out. Wondering if there is a rebuild kit out there for the factory differential. Does it use a clutch pack that can be serviced? Do I need to get an entire new unit from Eaton of Auburn? What RPO code tells me if I even have POSI?

I tried a search but couldn't find these specific answers.

Thanks for any assistance out there!

-Jose

G80 is posi. the only thing you can do is drain the oil. but if it is G80 (and has the tag on the diff) you MUST USE THE GM POSI ADDITIVE.

jack up back of car and spin a wheel. If they both go the same direction, you have a posi, if they go opposite, you have an open diff

NAPA Does have a complete bearing set for the rearend. Just need to find an intelligent parts guy to look it up. If you have a posi unit, it can be rebuilt, but make sure you get GM clutches, the aftermarket ones don't hold up.

I'm being told the G80 Auburn Posi unit is not rebuildable...? Is the dealer the only place to get the rebuild clutches?

the gm unit is NOT rebuildable. thats why a lot of people do the eaton. then again.. if your upgrading the rear just go to the 8.5 gn rear.

I have seen the guys at the dealership rebuild posi units, Maybe they were not for the 7.5 rear end, not sure. But I have spoke with a few techs that all say the after market clutches are junk.
