Tranny Help!!!!
Permalink Closed

Hello all,

My tranny has developed a massive leak in the front, I would assume it is likely the front seal and that usually means most of the time the front pump and TC need to be replaced too.

My question......any shops you can recommend in the Coram area? I cannot drive the car more than a few miles or so, it leaks way too fast, and it is dripping on the exhaust so the risk of fire is there. Also, in just a few miles it leaks enough that it can no longer shift.

Towing is not an option, and I am VERY short on cash.

So, I need a shop I can trust who won't dig too deep in my pockets. This is a 2004r in my 85 SS. It is a CK unit from 2003, about 40K miles, until this still worked like new. Has a D5 converter in it now, about 2400-2500 stall.

Oh, this is also my ONLY car these days, so until I get this fixed, I am totally stranded!  Any suggestions?

Thanks!

He's right in selden, its the closest place I could think of. He's were the old sleepys was on middle country rd, the shop is next to island federal credit union.
Prepare for him....he's a strange one.

Thanks. I became desperate, haven't even been able to work all week, so I bit the bullet and took it to aamco in centereach yesterday morning.
There is a place around the block, champion transmission, but all the consumer info on that place says to stay far away! The aamco has great reviews from tons of people at least, so we'll see how this goes.
I am sure it is the front seal, but I won't know if there is more to it until they open it up. Most likely the tq converter and pump are damaged, 99 percent of the time that will be the case. The labor cost is what is going to kill me I'm sure.
I can't afford this, but I can't afford not to work either.
Wish I still had my garage, I could have taken care of this myself, apartment life .....ahhhhh joy.
I'll let you all know how it turns out.

It is the front seal....no, does not need a rebuild, it works perfect.
The torque converter nose is chewed up, pump shaft too. New seal, new converter, the pump they will machine and re-use. $1000 plus......mostly labor cost. Should be done tomorrow

So, the converter neck cracked which caused the seal failure. Also means an extra $100 as the old converter core can't be used. So, root cause determined. It'll be done tomorrow. Anybody have $1000 to loan me? lol.

No worries Jim, my CK unit has been bullet proof and is still as solid as day one, and I do not baby my.....ummm.....baby.  lol

I had the tranny in before I did the motor swap, I put the converter in with the motor change, it wasn't from CK, it was a used GN converter. I don't know how or when I cracked it, but that converter has been in 7 years and easily 35k miles. Chris builds rock solid trannies, you'll be fine! Love this tranny!

I was going to go use CK as well like everything you here good and bad I was looking on turbo Buick site since those guys have built 2004R and everyone there recommends Extreme Automatic they said that's where a lot of people get there 2004R from.So I called them and talked to the guy and he charges $2200 for a stage2 tranny that holds up 1000hp and no core is needed its charged in the price and if you ever need it refreshed he charges $350 to do it. That where I plan to get mine look them up online.

tim, iwish i knew what i did with my old converter id give it to you.. but its been missing for a few years now.

extreme makes a great trans. however there is way more options. #1 i'd NEVER take a 200-4r anywhere on long island to be rebuilt. i wish eric was still around. however, what i hear is that jack cotton in mass got a few of eric's top builders and they're building trans for jack now. my trans. is still as solid as it was day 1. i got about 80 track passes on it and the street abuse.

when i do mine again, the only place id go is mike kurtz. like i said extreme is good but mike has been in the game a damn long time.

Scott, thank you, much appreciated, but the bus is right here and is a quick straight trip to the shop.
So, everything was all set and ready.....except, my TV cable is worn beyond use, so I have to wait until Monday. Apparently finding a new TV cable on a Saturday proved to be a challenge. Who knew parts for a 27 yo car aren't readily available! I'm shocked! lol.

My big challenge is not going stir crazy! Been stuck home for a week now.......this is how someone can go insane. Last time I was this long without a car I was 17! Back when trex ruled the earth! lol.

Jim, I'll make it a point to get over there while you're here!

Jesus, sucks, but starting over with a clean motor is always a good idea, like you said, then you know what you have. Was nice to meet you Sunday! Mmmmm.....new 383? Build what you got?
Good luck either way....and have fun!
