the new hood! and other upgrades!
Well, here is what everyone is waiting for! to see how bad I F*cked it up, LOL!
the new hood
Off with the old
On with the new!
I hid the Fuel pressure gauge in the Cowl, Hard to see in the pic, but after it's painted, I'm going to install another light in the cowl to light up the gauge better. I can see it perfectly in the dark!
the back side
now she's all shined up and rady to rock, Hopefully it will be in the paint shop at the end of September!

Well since the rain spoiled my plans today, figured I'd do some stuff on the car. I finally got those radiator cowl plates in last week. went to install them and found a section of the nose piece needed to be cut as well as the support bracket (as per the directions). I didn't like that idea so I had Matt take the plates to school and use the shear to nip 5/8" off them. Now they fit perfect and look great, Just need a quick painting in the spring. figured they would get overspray on them when it goes to the paint shop on the 30th anyways.
And while I was out there installed the carb spacer and a new fuel filter also. I just need to make an extention to resecure the back of the throttle cable/Cruise control mounting bracket, it flexes too much when I accelerate .

And Joe, I don't think that is too funny!

It actually looks alot like Dave's car on the Buffalo Craigslist. Only $1800 because the guy only wants back whats owed in paint or something like that the ad says.

I got out of work late and had to do some stuff for my mother. By the time I got home it was close to 6:30, He is usually there until 7 so I'd have to rush to get out there. I guess I'll try again next week.

Well seeing as how Doug has been tormenting me about my car lately, I took him out there this morning to take a look. It's getting there, he has the first coat of paint on and was wet sanding it so he could put the second coat on tonight. He said I should get it back Wednesday. The spoiler is fixed and he epoxyed it to make it stiffer, plus he removed a dent in the fender and repaired some scratches and sags from the last paint job. Over all I'm happy! I miss my car!!!!
From 2 weeks ago when he finally got started on it:
today in the paint booth:
And the color matched perfectly! I was really happy for that.

Doug, actually the guy who painted it before was a Pot head and I think he did some coke too (never saw it, but heard he did) So you were not too far off, LOL!
Turna, I really like the factory stripes, But at $500 for the complete kit, I'm going to wait until I have the whole car repainted.

Thanks Scott, The ones I was looking at were GM stripes, not the repros. Plus I was going to order 3 extra door sections to flow through the door jambs, it was like $467 plus shipping so roughly $500. I guess, maybe the repros would be a better choice. We'll see.
John The stripes for your 87 are totally different than the 85-86 stripes. Yours are 3 wide in different shades of red, Mine are 1 stripe with multiple color stripes within

The way I look at it is, you arent restoring the car to "concourse status" so why spend the extra cash on GM decals.

$289-$299 Mikes, any year $299 Dixie, GM Restoration part Flea Bay $149-$249 and you even if you had eagle eyes couldn't tell the difference.

Thanks guys, It wouldn't have happened if it wasn't for my wife. She paid for most of it. I'm still baffled on how I managed to win as many awards as I have with such a crappy paint job. LOL!
As for the stripes, I'm going to hold off until the whole car gets done, I would rather put the money into the rear end, I want to get the Power Trax set up, reseal the axle, an Aluminum Diff cover, plus maybe get a set of Billet or Tubular trailing arms.
Joe, Are you going to be home Wednesday? I'll swing by on my way home with the car.

what, can't a guy take an evening off with out being hounded? LOL!
Ok, I picked the car up last night, first thing I saw was my spare on the right rear, That made me nervous, when I opened the truck the tire that was on the car was shredded. Turns out the guy that did the detailing apparently had a blow out while driving it. the thing that got me pissed was, my jack and spare tire have never been used int he 18 1/2 years I have owned the car!. oh well, no use whining. Over all the car came out really nice, a few fisheyes in the nose piece that are hard to see, but no more cracks! and the side of the spoiler is a little rough, hoping a little wet sanding and polishing will fix that. Oh yeah and they left me with an empty tank, LOL!
here are the pics!
had to swap the wheels over, the stock ones looked like crap!

Thanks guys, It came out nice.
Tim, the whole underside of the car needs to be repainted flat black again, plus under the hood, and the wiper cowls. I spent some time the other night respraying three of the wheel wells and some of the underside, But I have been feeling under the weather this week and haven't been able to spend much time in the garage

Sorry John, No chicken soup for me, Can't stand the stuff! As for final product pics, You'll have to wait until Sea Pirate, cause at the rate I'm going, that's about the time it will be done! I made it home from work today around 3:30 spent the last 2 1/2 hours out there, wiping down the front suspension, frame and the sheet metal shroud behine the nose, Then painted it all flat black. Same thing with the front wheel wells. 4 cans of paint later I'm high as a kite so I gave up, LOL! Still need to do the underside from the doors back to the rear bumper, even my gas tank is white in spots.
Doug, Don't start! Cause I will drive you nuts when your car goes in! LOL! He sent it out to get detailed because there was overspray everywhere and I do mean everywhere! I guess this guy is by the airport someplace, He did an awesome job of making the car shine, but he wreecked the decals on the rear window, plus the tire issue and then I find out the guy is doing these cars for Don quickly because he is going to court for his 3rd DWI! As for the spare it was a full size already, but like I said, never used, heck I haven't even had time to figure out how to put the jack back in place! thats what bothers me the most! Not that t can be seen easily, but it had never been used and was mounted perfectly.

Tim I like that, But I have something a little more disturbing in mind! LOL!
John, my mother could care less of what I do to my car, Now my wife would say something, And since she bought the hood and paid for the paint, She has final say in that matter! But since she also got me the Taz that's in the 01, I don't think she will mind.

Been a long time since I updated this, Mainly because there hasn't been too many upgrades. But I guess it's time to get some work done.
Last year I purchased a used NASCAR Air cleaner base assembly. The idea was to create a way to isolate some of the hot air from the engine bay from entering the carb. After thinking about it for a while, I decided to create higher sides to seal closer to the cowl hood. Then we added the back section to keep the back sealed. After a few test fits and trimming, here is the final mock up.
So I got the air cleaner finished, it came out awesome!!! I had to reposition a few things, and later today I have to move my fuel pressure gauge because it hits.
right after it was buffed
then installed
Stripped the front end parts and started painting the frame and under carage
new parts for the sway bar, too bad the frame clamps don't fit. Had to clean and paint the originals
Look better installed
Plus the new front shocks
Matt painted the F41 bars for me
And they are installed
Today, I will bolt in the rear shocks and adjust the rear brakes, Hopefully the transmission lines, but I did forget my bender and flare kit so the one piece I need to make for the temp gauge will have to wait.

Thanks guys, But it's all for nothing. I popped either a head gasket or something else tonight. Guess I will find out next month when we get back from Michigan

how much restoration did u do to the whole car I mean the engine compartment and even the wheel wells and the paint work with the high gloss white ... she looks brand new.. the day when I buy my 4th gen ill just send her to u to restore
So I'm impatient! Got the head off today. The gasket is torched! The fire ring around cylinder #2 is blown right out and the gasket looks like it was burnt. Looks like everything will be OK, head isn't cracked and there is no leaks past the valves. I'm relieved! Maybe I can sleep tonight?

John, Over the last 25 years I have spent over $35K and have changed just about every nut and bolt in that car. Everything has been replaced or refurbished. And as Jimmy puts it, I spend over 4 hours cleaning it before every show and then another 2 hours at the show. But she shows her age. With 205K on the odometer, she's traveled in 8 states and into Canada.

OF course, even after getting it back together and running, I developed another issue.
The car just hasn't been running right, won't idle smooth, hesitates and I can't richen it up enough. Last week I pulled the pcv valve and there was still vacuum in the valve cover. So tonight, I pulled the intake off. Sure enough, the gasket imploded on cylinder #6 and #3. Never had a Fel Pro gasket fail like that. Tomorrow I will stop and get another gasket and start putting it back together.
This is getting aggravating! I just want to go out and drive it!!

Guess, I never updated this after the last issue. I got it running right after I replaced the intake gaskets. After that, I just drove it there rest of last year.
Now on to my latest advancement.
Ever since I added the MSD unit, my factory tach hasn't worked properly. So, I wanted to add a aftermarket tach. But there is no place to mount it without drilling new holes and damaging the interior. One evening I was watching the Pro Mods on TV and it gave me an idea!
I created a mount that attaches to the A Piller using the existing screws to mount it. I also added a Air/Fuel ratio gauge to even it out top to bottom.
Well, I managed to get into the garage for a moment today and got some pics. Last night, We got Matt's car out of storage and I swapped over the wheels and fixed his headlight issue.
So now it's tighter than ever in there.
Here it is mounted
And with it running.
Still need to get the new headlights in as well as the radiator support cross bars. But I think that may wait till May when we get warmer weather. Right now I need to concentrate on getting the 01 and Matt's Monte ready for the Glen next week.

Managed a few minutes today to work on the 86. Swapped over 2 head lights and wired in the HIDs. I will try to finish up the other side later this week

The new:

High beam:
Next up, Swapping out the lights for the LEDs that Jimmy "donated" LOL!
