3.8 coolant leak - what a surprise.
Permalink Closed

After doing some research online this seems to be a REAL common problem.  So much of a problem it looks like a class action lawsuit was filled but see nothing newer than 2005 on this and there was a recall but was simply to put a leak sealer in the coolant.  This looks like it may be happening to all 3 of our 3.8s.  What is the best thing to do here?

Is it a LIM or UMI gasket? Maybe one of the coolant elbows?

On the 02 Monte I was shown at the intake manifold and was told by my local garage that there is an updated intake and gasket set that should be done for around 900 to 1000. Understandable that is why I am asking.

Yeah, Coolant leaks are a big isue with GM's 3.4 and 3.8L intakes. and Yes, if you want it to stop, better replace the intake and use the upgraded gaskets.

Is it a visible leak, or is it a code that told you it was leaking?

The most common problem is actually that the coolant elbows break. Its a poor design and I am very surprised that GM hasn't put out metal replacements for it (iron or aluminum).
