ok so i tried to get my 88 inspected found out i need front seals greased both rear wheel cylinders replaced an idler arm rear wheels relined front inner seals and the rear bearings repaked like 300 in parts and 900 labor wow
Ok, Something is not right there, The rear bearings do not get repacked, they are lubed with the gear lube in the rear end. The front wheel bearing get repacked and seal replaced.
The rear end is a straight axle, so it can't be aligned. Unless you have a bent trailing arm, then it gets replaced. The front end should be aligned, especailly since the idler arm is getting replaced.
Wheel Cylinders are a pain to do in G-bodys, GM used these stupid snap rings to hold them in instead of bolts like every other car on this planet. So the labor is a bit more. But the rear shoes are easy

okay Im curious, and just so i know not to go there , were did you get that estimate from ??
as far as the labor rate, alot of places go by what the book says , for instance , if a idler arm is quoted at 1 hr labor and they can do the repair in a 1/2 hour, they still charge 1 hour regardless time
Looks like someone is looking for a deal on a nice monte!! Last May when I took mine for an inspection at the "big tire shop", I knew my rear wheel cylinders were due, but rolled the dice anyway. When he pulled the drums, sure enough, it wouldn't pass without replacement. I agreed and they charged me $239 for rear shoes with a life time warranty, wheel cylinders and NYS inspection. On top of that, the guy left the car on the lift and let me give the bottom of the car a good looking over for at least an hour. I guess it all depends on where you go. Don't know if they are up that way but it was a Mavis Tire and Auto located in Pawling, NY.

Jason, Take it to Dan's Shop, He's honest and will tell you how it is. Chain Stores are a disaster! Yes they are convienent, but they are botton feeders! They will write you a list of stuff just because they "don't Like the look of it"
I worked at Firestone for 3 years and hated having to listen to the salesman speech to the customers. They ended up seeling everything but what the car really needed half the time!
