I think no CL til 87 or so, hopefully Cort will see this and set the record straight.

Oh, come on guys ... this is NOT that difficult ... you do NOT need me!
RC ... yes, your 1983 Monte Carlo, non-SS, is a Sport Coupe (SC).
The Custom Luxury (CL) package is an INTERIOR UPGRADE package ONLY ... despite the fact that those with this package received special "CL" badging on the exterior. People mistake that for a model designation ... it is NOT. The CL package, available throughout the fourth generation SC and LS models (1981-1988), included "pillowy" seats (the '87-'88 style being more pillowy than the '81-'86 style) and different door panels, among other things. I'm not sure, however, about the gauge package....
The Landau Coupe can be with or without the CL package.
Models (to my knowledge) 1981-1982 ... Sport Coupe (SC) and Landau Coupe (LC) 1983-1985 ... Sport Coupe (SC) and Super Sport (SS) 1986 ... Sport Coupe (SC), Luxury Sport (LS), Super Sport (SS) and SS Aerocoupe 1987 ... Luxury Sport (LS), Super Sport (SS) and SS Aerocoupe 1988 ... Luxury Sport (LS) and Super Sport (SS)
SC models have "boxy" front ends, "boxy" rear ends, and "edgy" dashboard trimmings, like my '81 MC SC:
