I have a 1988 monte carlo ss that has a few upgrades,

'72 350 motor, stock heads, 4 bolt main (15,000 mi from rebuild)
700r4 trans
weiland intake
770 street performer holley carb
hooker headers
true dual 2.5" exhaust

I am planning on raceing this car at the local dragway about once a month and using it for local cruise nights on the weekends.

I have been tossing Ideas around about the engines i should use.

-383 with stock 72 block, and aftermarket 215cc heads. (plan was to do the bottom end this year and leave stock heads and replace heads next year).

-406 with vortech heads. (this will be a direct swap, planning on finding a block and building)

-454 motor from a junkyard(eventually rebuilding it)

I would like to see the car do 10-12 sec in the quarter mile as a final goal.
I know that I will have to repalce everything to get to that point. Just not sure on the best way to get there.

I am on a budget and would like to do the buildup gradually, But what are the advantages/ disadvantages of the different motors. I know that a 383 and 406 can make 400+ hp with a decent build. but a stock 454 can do that too.

I might have a 400 short block all built needs.  The  heads need to have  steam holes in them.  It think it 30 over. I was going to used it.  The 454 is good  too. I like the small block better.  Parts a lot easyer to get and cheaper too.  Good luck
