Hey guys...hope your not sick of me n my sick mc but yeah I own an 02 ss and lately. I've been having poor mpg like 13mpg so I took her in and they said I need a good cleaning og my throttle body and a new bank 1 o2 sensor..now I don't know if its true about the throttle body cause my car idles just fine but the o2 sensor puzzles me...can a sensor be bad or going bad and the engine light not come on? And if I can clean my throttle body myself how do I perfor it?
Kyle, Was this car under water for a period of time?? I have never come across a car that has this many electrical issues!
First Yes the o2 sensor can periodically stick in the Lean reading and cause the fuel economy to drop severely. It controls the fuel mixture for the most part. Unless it stays below or above a fixed voltage increment for more than a predetermained time frame, the light will stay off. Also a real common running rich issue that doesn't set any codes is the fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail, if it is leaking into the vacuum line, your economy will fall off.
As for the throttle body cleaning, take the air induction hose off the throttle body and air filter housing, then hold it open spray THROTTLE BODY CLEANER, Do not use brake clean or carb cleaner, then use a rag to wipe off the carbon from the throttle plate as well as the throttle bore. Be sure it is very clean, then reassemble and drive it hard for a few minutes to allow the computer to relearn the throttle limits and idle circuit.

No she was just negected by the previous owner.. now I'm getting all the headaches. Ok so I don't have to take the throttle body completly off the car?
Is there a way to check the regulator without doing a pressure test? When I pused on the top of the regulator is it supposed to be stiff or is it supposed to go up n down like on a spring and if fuel was present in the line am I smelling it for fuel or would the fuel be present? Thanks
Kyle, the regulator is a solid pice, the spring is internal with the diaphram. When the engine is hot and while it's running, pull the vacuum hose off, if the regulator is leaking it will spit gas out.

Thank you sir...it seemed to twist when I turned it but when I turned on the car no fuel came out. So it has to be hot cause I had just turned it on after 8hrs of sitting
don't twist it too much, that will cause it to start leaking past the o-ring seal. and yes the diapham will leak more when it's hot. if it's really really bad, then it will leak all the time.

Ok its not leaking so that's a good sign...now I heard something about my maf could possibly be dirty witout a trouble code...is that true cause if so I might as well clean it when doing the throttle body plate..yeah?
yeah, it's a good idea to clean it, just don't touch the fillament, they break easily. Just spray air induction cleaner or an electronics cleaner and blow the liquid off, then reinstall it. You will need a T15 tamperproof Torx screwdriver to remove it though

Ok I cleaned my throttle body and it was filthy! And I saw coolent in the intake so I replaced the tb gasket. Hopefully that helps my mpg what do u think
