Does anybody else own a Jeep grand cherokee that all of a sudden started stalling?? People havetold me that some of te PCMs that were installed in the jeeps are the wrong ones.. but after 8yrs now its doin this?? there is'nt any codes to go by..
Jim, What Motor?? 5.2L or 5.9L V8's? And will it start right up after it stalls?? If so then have your battery checked, If the battery voltage drops below 9.6 volts while cranking, the computer will lose it's idle circuit memory and cause it to stall at stops until it relearns it's memory, then it will start all over again the next morning. Also they have a tendancy to carbon up the idle control motor, pull that and clean it with carb cleaner as well as the ports.
If it has the 4.0L I6 then it may be a crank position sensor starting to fail, if that happens then it won't restart until it cools down a bit.
And in both cases Fuel pumps go bad a lot.
Those are common issues, but I would need more info to really help diagnose it. Hope this helps

Not sure of the differences between a wrangler and a cherokee but my wrangler stalls when going around a corner when the tank is less than 1/2. I fubure the pickup tube must be broke or something... Is yours stalling at idle stoipped or while moving?
Its the 4.0 and i brought it to a shop to get it scanned and an old crank sensor code came up.. it will start right back up in most cases then sometimes it takes a little bit usually about the second time.. and it does'nt do it everyday. seems to stall at idle or moving at slower speed.. Now the next question, where is the crank sensor?? i have an idea where it should be but you can't even see anything in there.. i can't even find the connector..
The crank sensor is mounted on the back of the engine, not straight up, but off to the side, kind of hard to get to without a lift. The sensor connector is here. Make sure if you replace it, the felt pad is still on the sensor. That is the "feeler gauge" for the sensor air gap. it bottoms out on the flywheel tone ring, gets tightened, then when you start the truck, the felt wears off and the sensor is adjusted.

I have that same picture in my Hays book and it must be different cause i still don't see it.. I cleaned the Idle Air Control it was dirty but now the gasket that goes to the piece to the TB i can't get anywhere so i'm gonna have to use silicon..
Theres another part that comes off but they don't make the gasket for it.. And as far as the crank sensor, they hid it very well.. Can't even see it from under and from the top, i can't even get my hand in there to feel for a bolt.. The wire connector is'nt where that pic shows.. Now they say that those generation Jeeps are unsafe cause u can see the gas tank from the back.. It took them that long to figure that out.. A-holes...
i have a jeep grand cherokee with the 4.0. when i got it from a friend he had intermittent stalls with it also, would get it towed and by the time it got to the mechanic it would start. i got the jeep for the wife it would do it from time to time, no codes... i let the jeep sit for awhile then i started to drive it, did it to me a few times. got a code... crank sensor. changed that and the p/u in the base if dist. now the fun part, it went about three weeks no stall then one day it did,it did however start rite back up... happened a few more times and has gotten worse. it will do it cold or hot. a few have said the body control module may be going out. from what i understand it's under the hood on the pass. side, truck to a shot on that side some time back. now it starts fine but if you drive it any it stalls, when you try to restart it acts like no fire... you can smell the fuel but nadda. i'm not sure if it's fuel pump going crazy or bcm or what. mike

Jim, I think on your year, the sensor connector is on the sensor, not like the picture showed. I have seen a few of those too. But the sensor is in the same place, driver's side just off top center of the bell housing.
Mike, try cleaning the thottle bodyand the Idle Control Motor, they coke up with carbon, cause it to stall and flood, have seen that a few times. Also if you think it's the PCM, while it's running, take a screwdriver and tap it, if it stalls, thats your problem, Remember, Chrysler PCMs need to be reprogramed so a Junkyard one won't work.

thanks Dave. the connector on mine was on the pass. side and the wire looped around the back to the driver side. on changing mine, i put my jack under the trans cross member and loosened the bolts at the frame and lowered it down a bit. i used a long extension and a swivel socket to get to the bolts.. mike

Hey a big thanks for the info on dropping the trans... i worked out sweet!! ..and thanks to everyone that helped you guys ar eawsome!!
cool deal Jim, i had to get my computer reflashed and put in a new fuel pump. seems to being working great. thanks to Dave for the heads up on the computer problem. all here to help one another . mike
