Power glide vs th 350
Permalink Closed

What is your opinion. The power glide is a two speed and the th350 is a three speed. I have not done any research yet but what is the final ratio?? From what I remember the final ratio is one to one. Thus the rear end will give you the better or worse gas mileage?? I have been asking around and a few say that the th350 is better but many say that the power glide was the best tranny chevy made. I am looking to restore my 71 Monte and it has a power glide in it now. I am not looking to race it but to have a nice car that I can drive regular in the summer. I also would be driving it to many shows. So I am looking at wanting some spunk and reliability with a little fuel economy also. If the th 350 wont give me any better mileage I am thinking that it is worth keeping the power glide.

BOb,
Between a PG & a th350 I would go with the th350.

But heres one better for you, go with a 700 or 200 and get the overdrive for cruising.

If I remember, the powerglide isnt 1.00 but more like 1.82. the TH350 is 1.00 and will give you better mileage. Better option is a 2004R, phisically the same size as the PG and TH350, uses the same yoke, so the drive shaft will work. Only difference is the mount is 6.5" further back. 2004R will give you roughly a 0.71 4th gear. Thats even better for mileage.

for an example, Im running a TH350 with a 3.73 rear and 275/60/15 tires. I am doing about 3K RPM @ 70mph. I will be swapping to a 2004R next spring, should bring me down to about 2200rpm

If you are keeping the car all original then keep the powerglide.

But if you are restoring it the way you want it,

To make it your own,

Then it is definetly time for a 700r4 or 2004r.

If anything is going to help the gas mileage, it will be the overdrive trans.

i personally would go with a 200-4r. when built right it takes one hell of a beating! if your just cruising with it.. 700-r4. the 700 has a high 1st gear and deep 4th.

but again.. both trans should not be done by a local guy.. best to have them done by someone who knows the trans.

LOL! Yes! Your that slow!!!

Bob, Keep The Powerglide in the grage, if it's the original trans, you may want it if your restoring the car to original. But I agree with these guys, put a 200R4 in it. it will hold up well and get better mileage.

I was going through the classifides today and I ran accrossed an add for a recently rebuilt th400 for $400. I know the overdrive is probably the way to go but the car needs some attention. I want to get the car up and going as fast as I can. This should take about two years is what I am hoping for. I want a good reliable tranny for now until I can maybe change to an overdrive. The th400 should go with no problem right?? The drive shaft may need cut also right??

TH400 is bigger than the 350 and glide, will need shorter, possibly different driveshaft and crossmember for the TH400.

I only paid $650 for my TH350 brand new from summit, you can get similar deals from jegs, tci, and other places.

The idiot didn't know what he was talking about!! He said it was a chevy tranny and it was not. As far as I know there is nothing wrong with the tranny. I am plaining on taking her apart and restoring she. When I am done I want no problems or at least very few of them. The car has 120K on it and a tranny rebuild should be in in the scheme of things.

As long as your trans works.

Save your money and just use the trans that is in it now.

Why spend 4 or 500 bucks on someone elses junk, when you don't plan on using it in the final assembly anyway.

When you do stuff like that 2 things happen....

1. the car never gets done because you wasted $$$$

2. you wind up with a garage that looks like mine!!!!!
