Each year, I do at least one "major" road trip to see places and meet family and friends.  I hope to do some "weekend voyages" during 2010, but for now, I'm planning these drives....

Dude ... I ssssooo wanted to be an OTR trucker.  A family friend of ours drove for Mayflower for MANY years.  Every time he was in Chicagoland, he'd drop by for a visit and stay with us.  I so much enjoyed getting to sit in the cab ... and we even went with him on a few local runs in the summers when he'd be here a few days.  As I got older, I wanted to do that for a living, but I can't ... because I can't pass the physical tests/weight lifting requirements.  Bah....  I have a few friends now that are truck drivers and hate it because they don't see their families much.  I don't have a family (er,, one of my own...you know what I mean) ... so I wouldn't mind that at all!

BTW ... did you see my Route 66 pics???  I had such a blast on that trip.......  *sighs*

 

Tim ... it'll be great to finally meet you, too!

And, Jim ... that'd be cool to see you twice on the trip.  In PA, I'll be on the east and west ends and the north end to head to NY.  IIRC, you're closer to Philly, right?  I haven't had a chance to look at what route I'll be taking headed south to Philly/NJ, etc. ... but plan to do that in the coming weeks.  I know we're trying to get something in Neptune NJ, like we have in previous years.  Just not sure right now the timing, etc., of all that.  I'll post more details when I have 'em...sorry!

 

In the meantime, though ... one of the sections I've looked at for a possible path is northern PA.  I've read about US Route 6 [another route I want to travel the length of ... "someday"] in Pennsylvania.  If I have time, I'm thinking of taking one of 3 routes to "touch" US Route 6 across PA from Ohio to Binghamton NY...

...I-80 E ... PA 66 ... PA 321 ... US 6 E ... US 220 ... I-86 E

(or)

...I-79 N ... US 6 E ... US 220 ... I-86 E

(or)

...i-80 E ... PA 219 N ... US 6 E ... US 220 ... I-86 E

 

Thoughts on any of these possibilities?

 

 

After traveling Route 66 (September 2009), I really want to travel other routes, including US Route 6, US Route 20 (which cuts right through my home town), the Lincoln Highway, and others.  Heck, I'd love to drive Route 66 again....  But, not enough vacation time right now...dangumit.

cort.. who ever told you that you need to take a weight lifting test is a liar. next time you go to your doctor ask them if you'll pass a DOT physical. if so your in luck.. however, its a aweful life... for me anyway, you love traveling so you might like it! i havent seen the pics yet. i'll do it soon though.. and if you decide to look more in to OTR let me know i'll help you out as much as i can.

Several of the trucking companies to which I applied "failed" me in the pre-screening (phone) interview when they asked if I could left over 50 lbs.  Obviously, my answer was "no"....  Are they not supposed to ask that?

Unfortunately, I'll be seeing my doctor soon, so I will ask....and then go from there.  But, yes, if no weight lifting requirements, then I want to pursue it....

I think I would like it, but who knows.  I don't have anyone keeping me home (well, other than my 1+ year old nephew), so I don't think I'd be bothered with the time on the road.....

 

Let me know when you take a peak at the Route 66 pics.  Curious to know what you think of 'em....

cort, i'm jealous. i want to do rt 66 someday. i hope you ate at the lopasodia (however its spelt) great food i like winslow a lot.. i should haev told you how to get to the creek.

anyway, yes thats right and wrong. look in to a no touch company like swift, jb hunt or shinder. they might be talking about the trailer doors in the wind they're heavy!

guys i just drove out to texas and back from delaware 25 hours (one way) in a car sucks! but it sure was fun. Rob what the hell is going on man? havent heard from you in a while! Anyway i still have the monte dude and this summer will be the summer!

Unfortunately, I didn't eat at that hotel. HOWEVER ... we did stop and had a drink (non-alcoholic, of course)... If you haven't seen the pics yet:






Route 66 is a trip I definitely recommend!!!!


And, thanks for the tip. I'll have to look into that. A cousin of mine drives a truck for a car-carrying company out of MN. He stopped here this past Saturday ... I'd love to have that job ... lol.

UPDATES....



** NOR'EASTER TREK, AUGUST 2010 **

I have an opportunity to travel Route 66 (Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California) again this year ... and I may take it. If I do, this August trip would be canceled.

HOWEVER ... right NOW ... I'm STILL geared up to travel to Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, New York, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania....

I'll post more details in July....



** JUNE 25-27, 2010 ... to RICHMOND IN **

I will most-likely leave early Friday morning, June 25 ... to be in Richmond late afternoon, where I'll be until after lunch Sunday, June 27, returning home that afternoon/evening.

To avoid the major road construction projects on most of the Chicagoland "expressways", I'll take this route (reverse for heading home Sunday)...:

Cort, on August 11th, on your trek from Philly to Baltimore, You are only 5 miles from me at the Delaware Memorial Bridge. Do you have time to detour and visit??.....Lemme know?

Jim ... oh cool!  Glad that will be OK.  I know Patty is hoping to meet up again this year.  I told her that we'd see how late I get to your place ... and go from there.  I stayed with her and her husband a couple years ago:

Hey Dave!  Sure, I can take some time for a detour and visit!!!!  I'll have a better idea of schedule and such next time around, right before I leave.  I'll also include my cell ph# in that next posting.  Plus, I think I'll be seeing you in Binghamton, too, right?  We can talk more then about a stop to see you on the 11th, if need be! :)
