Help please,

I have a 1988 monte carlo ss with the following

holley street performer 570 carb
weiland intake
hooker headers
350 chevy motor out of a 1972 camaro or corvette (wasnt sure about model)
3" collector main to 2.5" tail pipes
accell coil
hei distributor w/ mds cap and rotor
700-r4 trans
new wires and plugs Accell stuby header, and 8mm wires
timeing set at 36 deg
I removed one of the spring from the distributor

My problem is this combo should be quicker that the stock 305 but when I took it to the track my best time was 15.978 @ 87 mph.

What else should I do to improve perfomance without spending a fortune on new parts.

Any suggestions??

I would start with a bigger carb. Maybe a 650 or 670. What cam are you using?

if its out of a basic 350 Camaro, its only 200hp, if its from a Z28, its 255hp

if its a Corvette motor, same as Z28 above

I believe the stock 305 out of the G-Body was somewhere around 165hp

I would bet it has  76cc 822 smog heads.  CR ratio I would guess to be around 8.5 to 1.  Horse power would be around 200hp.

1972 Chevrolet Camaro Engine Options

  • 250 I6 110 hp
  • 307 V8 130 hp
  • L-65 350 V8 165 hp
  • L48 350 V8 200 hp
  • Z28 - 350 V8 255 hp
  • SS350 - 350 V8 300 hp
  • SS396 - LS-3 402 V8 240 hp

I have a 1970 chevy 355 4bolt Lt-1 motor that I bought used. The guy put this cam Lunati Street Master cam 08101 and a torker 2 intake 882 heads with shorty headers
It wakes up around 3500 rpm
I would run a larger carb.  like Doc said

I plan on dragging this car every other seek at the track while I save my money to get parts.

I would like to get this car into the 10-11 sec bracket. I know that Its going to take alot of work to get it there but I wanted the majority to be bolt on packages.

My plan is to build a 383 stoker out of this block (72 4 bolt main). I do have access to 2ea 350 two bolt main for free.

I wanted to replace the top end on this motor with parts that I could use on the 383 then over the winter have the engine removed and bored to make a 383 out of it?

Is this a good idea? Any comments would be appreciated.

This is a work in progress so it there is a better way I.E cheaper way to get there please let me know

I am 100% new to raceing and Engine rebuilding.

Is there anything I should replace on the car to help me at the races??

Thank you all

sure sounds like smog heads to me, That would be the first thing to go, next would be a bigger cam.

prety much all small block parts are interchangeable.
