I got my 1st 1987 LS when I was a senior in HS. My parents bought it from a private seller in Irondequoit, NY. It was bought for $4500 (iirc) and had approximately 45K miles on her.
In the next couple of years I played around with the car. I got rid of the elderly look and bought my first set of aftermarket wheels. They were ARE Chrome Nuggets. I think they were 15" and I remember I bought them for around $600 from The Dome Center auto show. TCI was the seller.
As my taste and style changed a bit I tinted the vehicle and bought another set of wheels and tires for the car. These too were ARE in 15" w/ 225/50/15 all the way around. It stayed like this until she was gone.
In January of 96 disaster happened. I was driving my girlfriend at the time home around 8pm. I was travelling S on Dewey Ave. across from Holy Sepluchre Cemetary (ironic) when I crossed the railroad tracks there hit ice and lost control of the vehicle. I went up across the curb and into a utility pole. The car bounced off and went back in the path of the N bound traffic. Fortunately no one hit me.
I was able to get up and walk away. Amazingly. Look at the steering wheel. My ex-gf was not wearing her seat belt and went head first into the windshield. She needed a few stitches and actually had glass come out of her forehead 4 months later. Yuk..
That was the end of my favorite car. Shortly after the vehicle was taken to the junk yard on Cairn St off Lyell Ave. I think I got $200? Two weeks later I saw another LS (silver)with my blue driver's side door on it. I knew it was mine as I had the door lock protector decal and deep window tint.
The LS was replaced with an 84 Regal from N.Carolina. I had it for a year or so but it was stolen. It was found stripped and left on Oscar Street on the east side of Rochester. It was sold to my then neighbor who made a drag car out of it as it was totaled by insurance. I then have had a few newer vehicles after that until a few weeks ago when I picked up another 87 LS. This one will never see ice.
Thats a little of my history. I plan to keep this car for a very long time. It's not my daily driver so I can be more selective with it. Now that I have a family, house and all the other responsibilites that adults have I won't be able to throw cash into the car like when I was in my late teens. So now this will be my hobby. Thanks for reading, Matt.
Very cool post, a few of this did this a while back, always nice to reminisce from the time we get our cars, and go through the progression of the changes, although it was sad to see the accident pick, the main thing as you said, was the car did it's job and you were safe and able to live on and buy another!
