2002 Monte Carlo SS - possible ignition problem
Permalink Closed

Ok, just got this car, and yesterday was the first time I've actually driven it.  The key, when I went to turn it off, appeared to be stuck in the ignition....but the car would still start/turn off.  Drove great.  BUT, the next (and last) time I turned the car off - the key came out and I thought "YEAH ME"...WRONG.....now the key goes in, but it appear that it won't let it turn to the "start" position.  All gages move like the car is going to start - but nothing happens.  Also noticed that the steering wheel isn't "locked".

Any clues as to if this is the ignition, if not - any other ideas?

really hard to diagnose over the net, but it sounds like you have a lock cylinder/ignition switch issue. 1st the tumblers wear so that could be why the key didn't release properly. 2nd, was the security light on? If so it put it in theft lock out. Turn the key to crank for a second then release to run, leave it on for 10 minutes, then repeat 2 more times. it will then relearn the key and should start. that's the best I can do from here.

Yeah, my lock/cylinder went and they had to change it out...luckily it happened to the technician while the car was in the gm shop...it was covered under warranty at the time.

Good Luck!
