OK, I've got an 86 SS, stock 305, 3.73 rear end, 200-R4 tranny. Flowmaster type exhaust hit. Im tearing the CCC out, I dont like them, i've heard good arguments on both sides, but im ditching it. Anyways, I'm going with an edlebrock carb/intake combo, smog delete, HEI distributor, summit headers heat/AC delete. I'm just having trouble choosing a good cam. Its not a daily driver so I could care less about MPG, I just wanna beef up the 305 while i do some body work and some interior work, then will come the bigger engine. No matter where i search I keep finding information the contradicts everything. I found a really nice Comp Cams kit, it comes with the cam, lifters, valve spring and timing chain/gears. 262/270 advertised duration and .462/.469 lift. Half the people I talk to tell me this will be perfect for what I want, and half the other people say its too big, or the tranny can't handle it. So im about ready to pull my hair out.
any Input would be helpful. I'm not trying to make a street/strip monster here, just something to have some fun with while I do some other things to the car.

Looking at those 2 cams, either one will work out great. The Comp cams has a bit more lift and will give you a more of a late 60's Muscle car sound. Thats the one I'd choose. In fact, come to think about it, It's the same cam I have in my 86 SS. But I still have all the computer and emissions stuff hooked up.

The Comp Cams (XE 262) is the one that I have in my 350. Nice cam, with plenty of low end torque. Has a slightly lumpy Idle (wish it was more, lol). Good choice.
