My new 350
Permalink Closed

so i finally got a 350 engine for my 86SS, picked it up this morning, got it up on a dolly, and once it warms up a bit we'll freshen it up (mild cam, valve springs, timing set, polished water pump, and chrome alternator.) and drop it in.

the two pictures are, one as soon as it got home, and two, on the dolly all dressed up

Looks like you have a Victor series type  intake on there.

Do you know what cam is in the engine now?

I am not sure what you consider a "mild cam" but you may not be able to use that intake with a mild cam.

its an old school edlebrock scorpion intake, from what ive been told its the same as a vic jr. the mild cam is a comp cams xe262, im not going to use that intake tho, im using an edlebrock performer. ill use the scorpion when i get some new heads and a bigger cam down the road.

sad news. took the engine to the machine shop to get the cam/lifters/valve springs done, and turns out my cam bearings are worn down to the copper. So my engine guy says he can take the whole thing apart, rebuild it (new pistons, rings, gaskets, rebuild the heads, main bearings, cam bearings, cams, lifters, valve springs etc.) for $1700, but i just dont have that kinda money right now, so it looks like im going to be doing the rebuild myself for the most part. im kinda bummed honestly, i bought this motor so i wouldnt have to go through all this, but i guess it'll be fun. ill take lots of pics and keep you all posted. For now I'm just gonna go with my origional plan of getting rid of the Computer and doing distributer, intake, carb, and headers. Ill post some pics of that too.

Did he inspect the mains?

Or did he just say it needs a rebuild?

as far as i know he dindt inspect the mains, just the front cam bearing was worn, he said he'd still swap the cam for me, but couldnt gaurantee i wouldnt spin a bearing sooner rather than later.

My first thought was your engine builder like most is a lying slimeball and just taking advantage of you. Squeezing you for every penny.

Then I thought well hell it has a Scorpion intake on it. So either the engine is very old or who ever built it did a half @ss job. Being that the Scorpion intake is about 30 years old.

I guess you will find out when you pick it up.

The engine should be apart if he checked the cam bearings. Intake off, timming cover off, timing chain removed, pushrods out, liffters out and of corse the cam out.

Are you saying it was built in 1978 as a performance engine? Or the block is from a 1978 car?

Save yourself alot of headache and just buy this when you have the money.

The rebuild that guy was going to give you for 1700, you could have this and it is brand new.

Along with a performer type intake and a 650 holley she will have plenty of power to have fun with.
