My 2002 Monte Carlo SS would not start after coming out of a meeting. So I replaced the battery and the car started for 5 seconds, the engine was running rough and then it just cut off. I went back the next day and the car started with no problems. As soon as I exit off to go home, the car sputtered and then shut off. I try to start the car, but it will not turn over. All the lights come on, it acts as if it wants to start, but it does not. Thinking it might be my fuel pump. HELP.
It could be the fuel pump. You best bet would be to take it to a good shop and have them take a look at it. It could be something else besides a fuel pump. Good luck
Thank You. I love my 2002 Monte Carlo. Hoping and Praying that is all it is. I touched the gas manifold under the engine, and it only spills over, does not spray or squirt over. No pressure built up.
****Update**** I went outside and my car started right up just like yesterday morning. So I started the engine up, while it was in park, I pressed down on the gas. While doing so, I noticed that the RPM needle was dropping was it hit four and kept doing so and then the car would shut off. Starting to think it is either the Catalyic Converter or the Fuel Pump.
I keep trying to start it, and it will not start again. The check engine light is not coming on at all. I hear the fuel pump making a small humming noise like it's getting into start up mode, almost like gearing up.
not necessarily, could be a couple things that the PCM wont trigger a code for.
Fuel Pressure Regulators are known to go bad on these cars and / or Fuel filter may be clogged
I'd start there if you are doing the work yourself. Filter is cheap, $12-$15. You may need a special tool to remove it, I dont remember.
If you bring it to a mechanic, they can check the fuel pressure before and after the regulator. If pressure is good before the regulator, pump is fine. If its bad after the regulator, regulator is bad.
I am a she, lol. I started up the car again this morning and the check engine light came on.
ok, thats a plus...lol. have it scanned, most parts places will scan for free. I know Autozone does. Write down the code, will be something like "P0125". That will tell us where to look.
Rob, if the PCM is totally fried, the car wont start at all, but it could be on its way out. However, Ive seen more regulators fail than PCM's. The PCM is pretty solid in these cars.
Rob, anything's possible, unless the PCM was taken out of the car before, I doubt the wires are loose. It's pretty secure, kept clean and dry up in the air box. The connectors are actually bolted into the PCM with some rather large bolts.
I've seen more than a few Impalas with faulty FPR's (fuel pressure regulators) that never set off the MIL (malfunction indicator lamp). It may set a code, but not all codes will illuminate the MIL. Have no idea what GM was thinking on that.
So, after the mechanic took a quick diagnosis of my car. He said the ECM is coding and then on top of that he asked if I was having problems with the alarm. Well after reading and researching. This is all in conjuction with the ECM and the PCM. So most likely I am going to have to replace the ECM, which is not a big deal. Found a really good deal on Amazon.com. I am having the fuel filter changed and some other minor work. all in all. everything including parts should not cost more the 660.00. Will update when he puts blacksexy on the computer tomorrow.
The car doesnt have an ECM, it has a PCM. You bought one off Amazon??? It has to be set for your car. The VIN has to be programmed in, the correct BIN file has to be uploaded and the SERV code on the PCM needs to match your original one. PCM's are sold by many performance companies with mild tunes in them, all set for your car, around $100. Fuel filter is about $15-20 and is a 5 min install.
02 Monte has 2 computers PCM (performance control module) controls the engine, transmission, etc. And they have a BCM (body control module) controls door locks, windows, lighting, etc.
PCM's rarely just go in cars these days. Something usually shorts them out. Make sure who ever replaces the PCM checks to be sure everything else is good otherwise you'll be back in the same boat. And Scott is right, the PCM needs to be Flashed or programed to the vehicle. If not the car won't start, basically a blank canvas until it is. Dealers use a Tech II and a computer to Flash the PCM's memory.
Don't forget if the BCM is on the way out, which is very common, it won't send a start signal through the Theft lock to allow the car to start. It might Crank but won't fire.
Diagnosing over the net is nearly impossible these days, Best bet it to take it to a well known and reputable repair shop and have it diagnosed properly

If that is'nt the problem try looking at the contol module under the coil packs!! ive had mine go out and it did the same studder and died like you mentioned!! Advance Auto or Auto Zone should be able to test it..
