I posted this on another Monte Forum it's been two days and no reply so I figure I'll have better luck on here.(It seems like most the ppl on the other forum had only newer Montes)
"I'm buying an 87 Monte Carlo SS and I want to do cheap mod's in the near future.I posted a thread on here for exhaust set-ups but now I'm dumb founded at what to do for a Cold Air set-up.I found one on Jeg's pre-made I guess it's a Spectre set-up but guys on other forums said that while it looks good it isn't as functional as say a custom set-up that's pulling colder fresh air from the outside.I really don't wanna spend more than $300 and I don't want some cheap custom design that isn't giving me any performance gains (even if it's only 5-10hp).Any suggestions would be nice pictures, videos ect. I just don't want to run into any problems with hydro-lock or pulling hot air from the radiator/engine."
"I'm getting an 87 Monte Carlo SS here in a week or so and I'm looking to change out the stock exhaust from the get-go.I just have no idea what's the best set-up (X-pipes or Straight Pipes) 2" or 3" Glasspack or no? Any help is greatly appreciated also sound or video clips would be great Thanks"
a good cheap exhaust is Summit Racing. They sell a 2.5" kit for around $200. Thats what I have on mine, although I swapped out the mufflers for some Flowmaster Super 44's.
A true dual exhaust will require either a new tranny crossmember or modding your OEM one. When you get under the car, you will see what Im talking about.
I wouldnt worry too much about a cold air intake, an open element air cleaner will do much better than the OEM snorkel style on the car. There is a bunch of us over the 400hp mark and all running a standard air cleaner on top of the carb.
here's mine, full length headers, Summit 2.5" exhaust with Super 44's. Also remember, Im far from a stock 305.
Well I work at a garage and my boss and I were talking about doing a 383 swap but that's going to be expensive and I need a good chunk of time to save so I figure I might as well do a few mod's to the car and the stock 305 that's in it..I like the set-up you have but i haven't had the chance to do a lot of research as to the disadvantages/advantages to running true duel's vs h or x pipes any idea?
I agree with Scott, The Summit set up is a good system, but the mufflers are fairly quiet. I have flowmasters on mine as well.
As for the Air cleaner set up. That Spectre deal is cool to look at, but unless you set it up so that the air filter is outside the engine compartment, you will draw in hot air. Best way is to mount the battery in the trunk and run the tubes through the radiator support where the battery was, mounting the air filter behind the headlights.

you could, but your Monte probably has a 3.73 already, going much more than that will kill you on the highway. I know a lot of people running much higher ratios and say highway manners arent that bad, but they are just in denial....lol
I found a corvette 350 SB (A friend of mine's) that I'm considering swapping the 305 out with.If I do this are headers and exhaust still my first concern as far as mod's go?
really shouldnt need anything but fluids. All accessories will swap over from the 305 to the 350.
The 2 motors are physically identical (external) its internal that they change to give you more cu.in.
If you are eliminating the emissions, you'll need to see what the new motor has before determining what is needed. You may need an intake / carb setup, carb linkage brackets, etc.

I have no idea how much space the under side of the car has for exhaust and I'm trying to do a little planning I know I want one of those Hooker Header's just not sure what the main difference is between them/how much room I have
So here's what I have in my head:
Hooker Headers Glass packs (any intermediate pipe if needed?) Flowmaster Super 44's Tail pipes
Does that sound right and should I remove the glasspacks?
I guess the engine is all done up ($2000 already invested in it) Corvette SB over 375HP I don't know what I'll do until I get the engine or have an idea of what's already been done but I do wanna get the rest of the car ready to handle that beastly 350 So exhaust it is!!
