true duals just means 2 separate pipes from the motor to the tips. If you look under your car, you will see a "Y" pipe coming from the motor into a single exhaust. If you simply split the exhaust after the "Y", then its not "true dual". I have heard this called a "split dual"
Hypothetically speaking if your emissions exempt and running w/o cats..What are the chances your running a loud exhaust and a cop pulls you over and he happens to peak under your car...or would this only happen to a ricer? :p
you will fail a visual inspection without cats unless "you know a guy"
I cant think of a single cop that would actually crawl under a car looking for cats. Besides, you have be loud and have cats. And being loud is against the law anyway.
Summit Racing makes a kit, its true dual from headers back. I have that on mine with Flowmaster Super 44's. It comes with mufflers but I wanted it louder.
You will need either a dual exhaust crossmember or need to modify yours. You will also need to "make" the system fit your headers or manifolds. Mine fit perfectly.
how hard is it to run true duels on my 06 ss... and main question who do u guys perfer for the exhaust company
First, running true duals would also mean running dual convertors on your car and that would require reconfigurating the floor boards to make room, and then you may still have an issue with check engine lights. Not worth the trouble in my opinion.
As for a replacement system, becarefull of what you pick. A muffler may sound good in 8 Cyl. mode, but when it drops into 4 cyl, it may not sound right.
minimal to none. The exhausts on these cars actually flow pretty well. Cat back mods are basically for looks / sound. If you want performance out of the exhaust, you have to look into cat forward components. (down pipe, cat, headers)
Rob, X pipe or H pipe cant be used on these cars. Its basically a split rear exit, single exhaust (split is right at the rear suspension)
best bet is a cat back exhaust (which you can get for around $500) remove the U-bend (I believe the SS for 06 and 07 still had them, but the LT's didn't. I could be wrong on that).
i would love more sound sound tough she comes alive but when she idles she can purr and purring is nice and all but like the rumble while sitting at a light instead of a purr.. i was hoping thou it would give me some few extra hp too thou like they claim.. besides looking at the cold air intake i got 303 hp i was hoping to grab at least 25 more from somewhere to stay in the game with more modern cars soon ill have civics pass me in hp
lol.. well i guess first thing to wonder is being front wheel drive how much hp can she take... and what u recommend doing to gain 25-50 more horsepower if its something not to tricky in doing or not to costly
i know nothing about those.. but i do know they are able to really run. and being fwd dont matter much.. my brother is puting 700 to the wheels down in his vw.. just takes a lot of patiants

Rob, the 06+ still has a UBend, but not as drastic as the 00-05. Still a good idea to eliminate it, but not where near the gains from replacing a 00-05 one.

www.ls1tech.com is where most go for info on the 5.3L
Cold Air Intake Headers / Down Pipe Tune Cat Back
Should get you a bit more HP when all installed together. Each really dont do much by themselves, but together they all work really well.
i was looking at the coldair u guys said for the 06/07 v8 go with c.a.i. version alos tune as in proformance chip tuner? seen messages yrs ago about the predator version?... cat back k heard of it many times but the whole exhaust thingy gets me confused cat back would be ?.. and isnt redoing the headers pretty expensive? and major overhauling?
Tune - I understand Diablo Predator works on 06SS but not on 07SS. You can also look into a tuned PCM. I believe Overkill does 5.3L tunes www.getoverkilled.com
Catback - exactly what it sounds like, exhaust from the cat back. (front pipe, resonator, intermediate pipe, Y pipe, mufflers, tailpipes)
Cat forward is from the cat forward (down pipe, headers)
Headers - dont know about prices, but Im guessing somewhere in the $500 range. Its a bolt on mod, not sure what it takes to get to the rear one. I know the 3800 motors are pretty tight.
intake - $250 range catback - $600 range cat forward - $500 range tune - $300 range
ahh so like from the catalitic (spelling) converter aka cat k makes sense back towards back end from engine.. so like $1500 not bad piece at time.. what would roughly be the hp/torque output be... roughly...since thats what makes difference if gonna spend 1500.. im hopeing at least 25 hp more.. 303hp was nice in 06/07 but its 2012 lol gotta be able to out race a civix lol
lololol... well u know it is muscle cars on one era comparied to another makes the first a joke.. i just wanna be able to still keep up with the $30k sports crs of today

unfortunately the W-Body is a very old platform and is what will hold you back in the long run. GM put a new generation LS motor into a 20 year old platform using a transmission that is known for failing. Not a great recipe for success. LS motors can make tons of power, but the rest of the car just cant handle it.
I had a lot of work and $$ tied up into my 04 Impala SS, I pushed the power levels as far as I dared with the rest of the car trying to keep up. I knew it was just a matter of time before the tranny would grenade itself. ask Joe, he can tell you all about the weak trannys in these cars)
I'm not saying not to enjoy your car and have a great time modding, just keep in mind the limitations the car has as opposed to nearly every other car on the market that isn't relying on a platform that came out of the 80's
Don't get me wrong, not downing the 5th+ generation Montes, Ive spent the last 12 years running one the the biggest W-Body sites on the net. I tell those members the same thing when they want to take on today's modern muscle cars.
i know nothing about those.. but i do know they are able to really run. and being fwd dont matter much.. my brother is puting 700 to the wheels down in his vw.. just takes a lot of patiants
u said volkswagon? wow thats a sleeper lol
the parachute gives it away... lol it'll be around at some events this year.
scott is right. the tranny's suck. in my sueprcharged monte by 60k miles the trans was done. however i think the shift kit helps a lot

shift kit helps, also a tranny cooler. Adjustments in the PCM will help too, as long as they arent too severe and play well with the shift kit (not all do)
And dont rely on rebuilt trannys even if all the upgrades are done. If a tranny is ever needed, www.tripleedgeperformance.com is the place to go. For the serious modder, start there, get a built tranny, then play with the motor
is there a way to know what is "safe" in regards to more power... if my engine can dish out more than it is now, is there a "number" that would be deemed "safe" for the car to handle..is 25 or 35 more asking for to much?
basically these trannys cant handle stock numbers. Its hit or miss, some have added 100+hp and have no issues, some havent added anything and have issues.
you dont have to upgrade the tranny, just keep it in mind that its a ticking timebomb with or without mods. (more so with mods)
whats ur secret keeping ur engine healthy.. just being my true first used car since i was like 17ish.. had new cars on leases 98 s-10, 01 blazer, 04 cavalier, 07 monte ss... now got a used 06 monte ss and i guess pretty paranoid about how it was driven in past owner life.
After reading, I'm guessing (MX5) is referring to vehicles less than 25 MY (Model Year) old with regard to catalytic converters. For cars over 25 MY like many of our g-bodies, this will not even be an issue as the inspector will only look at safety items (i.e. brakes, lights, tires, seat belts, mirrors, etc.). Emissions are not required.
